USDA Announces More Than $146M Investment in Sustainable Agricultural Research

Investment in renewable agriculture

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is taking a big step towards a more sustainable agricultural future. Secretary Tom Vilsack has announced an investment of over $146 million in research projects that aim to improve our food and agricultural system. This investment is made under the National Institute of Food and Agriculture’s (NIFA) Sustainable Agricultural Systems program, which focuses on finding solutions for labor challenges, land stewardship, climate change impacts, and critical needs in food and nutrition.

A Bright Future for American Agriculture

The challenges facing American agriculture and communities are urgent and require immediate action. Food insecurity, drought resilience, animal disease prevention, and market disruptions are just a few of the critical issues that need to be addressed. Now is the time for agriculture, forestry, and rural communities to come together and lead the way towards a more sustainable future.

Secretary Vilsack believes that investments in science, research, and climate-smart solutions are the key to overcoming these challenges. By nourishing our families, improving the profitability and resilience of producers, enhancing forest health, and creating new income opportunities, we can build wealth that stays within rural communities. This investment is part of NIFA’s Agriculture and Food Research Initiative’s (AFRI) Sustainable Agricultural Systems program, which aims to improve plant and animal production, sustainability, and human and environmental health.

Making a Difference, One Project at a Time

The 15 projects that have been awarded grants under the AFRI Sustainable Agricultural Systems program are diverse and impactful. Here are a few examples:

University of California

Researchers from the University of California and their partners are working on alleviating groundwater over-use and sustaining irrigated agriculture in the Southwest United States. Through innovative education programs, climate change adaptation management strategies, and the development of decision support tools, they aim to create sustainable groundwater and irrigated agricultural systems.

University of Hawaii

The University of Hawaii and its partners are developing a Children’s Healthy Living Food Systems Model to identify and test drivers of resiliency in food supply chains. The goal is to decrease food waste, increase food and nutrition security, promote healthful diets, and prevent chronic diseases in households and communities across the U.S. Affiliated Pacific insular area.

Central State University

Central State University, together with 1890 land-grant Historically Black Colleges and Universities, a 1994 land-grant Tribal College, and 1862 Land-grant Universities, is investigating the use of hemp as an aquaculture feed ingredient. They are addressing food safety concerns related to consuming seafood raised with hemp feed additives and working on ways to increase economic markets and production sustainability for seafood and hemp.

Colby College

A partnership project involving Colby College aims to optimize algae feed additives for dairy cows. By assessing the impact at the animal, farm, and community levels, they hope to enhance milk production, mitigate greenhouse gas emissions, and recover nutrients. The project also includes public outreach programs to educate the community about the benefits of this approach.

Investing in a Sustainable Future

These are just a few examples of the important research projects that have been funded. The USDA believes that investing in projects like these will result in long-term improvements in agricultural practices, benefiting consumers, farmers, and the environment. Adopting an inclusive systems approach is essential to tackle the major issues we face, and the impacts of this research investment will generate solutions that benefit all Americans.

USDA is committed to transforming America’s food system by focusing on resilient local and regional food production, ensuring access to healthy and nutritious food for all communities, building new markets and income streams for farmers and producers, investing in rural infrastructure and clean energy capabilities, and promoting equity throughout the Department.
